Mount Rainier Waterfall

Backcountry hikiing with 30 pounds of camera equipment can be gruelling but rewarding. Our National Park System is a treasure to be preserved. Mount Rainier is a great example of our National Parks. It is an active volcano with pristine mountain streams in a temperate rainforest. It is located in Washington State.

Artist Statement

When I am in a natural environment I become transposed. I see everything in 30 x 40! The camera becomes the mind's eye. The real work begins in seeing the details and appreciating our environment. It is a marriage of art and technology. It is my hope that capturing these details will inspire conservation and appreciation of the natural beauty in which we live.

At the age of 14, Pohl bought his first camera, a used Nikormat FTN, which he still treasures.  The next 40 years was spent refining the esthetic and technical aspects of photography.  He has taught photography at the university level and worked for two decades in the professional products division and as a photofinishing technical representative for Fuji Photo Film U.S.A..

Seeing the photo industry from the business and esthetic sides gives Jim a unique perspective.  His skills as a photographer has given him the ability to create expressive and archival photography that faithfully express his feelings about the natural environment around us.

The digital transition was emotional.  Jim found out however that digital gave new life to the way he sees photography.  Image editing have him total creative control from the image capture through fine art print making just as it had watching an image come up in a darkroom tray.  It is hoped that you can feel and share in the natural beauty that is depicted in these images.

A technical note:

Most images are scanned from 6X7 medium format using Fuji Velvia 50. Some older images were shot on Kodachrome 25. Most digital images are shot at 12.2 megapixels. All printing is done on an Epson Stylus Pro 7900 using Ultrachrome HDR inks. They are archivally printed, matted & framed.
